“The opening tonight of another season by the Portland Symphony Orchestra is a genuine occasion for public felicitation.”The Morning Oregonian, November 16, 1923

The Oregon Symphony Orchestra returns this month with a season that strikes that wonderful balance of pieces we know so well and those not yet in our collective experience.

The West Coast premiere of Composer-in-Residence Andy Akiho’s Sculptures will be performed alongside Dvořák’s Othello and Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique, while the world premiere of Judith by OSO Creative Chair Gabriel Kahane is grouped with Ravel’s Tzigane and Mahler’s First. And we welcome back Nathalie Joachim as Artistic Partner and Jun Märkl as Principal Guest Conductor.

Joining our OSO musicians are nationally acclaimed artists such as pianist Conrad Tao, who performs his own work Over and Haydn’s Keyboard Concerto in D major. And don’t miss pianist Tamara Stefanovich’s single-handed performance of Left Alone. Happily, the OSO also continues their intergenerational offerings (“Trills and Treasures” is the title of one such concert), as well as the Pops and Popcorn Series.

And, of course, Portland celebrates the return of Music Director David Danzmayr.

A lot has changed in the 100 years since the above quotation was published in The Morning Oregonian, but one thing has not: we are glad to see our orchestra back on stage. Let the public felicitation begin.
